This is a short, regular visit for the small things that get forgotten: replacing the return-air or furnace filter with the size you use, testing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, swapping their batteries, and noting any alarm past the date its maker says to replace it. It does not take long, but it matters.
Older homeowners, people who cannot easily get up on a step stool, busy families, landlords with rentals, and adult children setting it up for a parent ask for it, often every three months.
A neighbor can come on a set schedule and do the remembering for you. Furnace or air conditioner service, duct cleaning, and replacing hardwired alarms belong to a heating-and-cooling or electrical business.

What to ask before you hire
- What filter size does your system take, and who buys the filters?
- How many alarms are there, and where?
- Are any of the alarms hardwired? Backup batteries can be swapped, but wiring goes to an electrician.
- How often should they come: monthly, or every few months?
- Should they bring a sturdy ladder for high ceilings?
Staying safe
- Use a stable ladder, and make sure someone is home while you are up on it.
- Switch the heating and cooling system off before swapping the filter.
- Never leave an alarm off the ceiling without a working one back in place, and if one will not work with fresh batteries, tell the owner right away.

Questions people ask
How often should air filters be changed?
It depends on the filter, pets and the season, so follow what the filter's package says. Many homes swap them every one to three months.
How often should smoke alarm batteries be changed?
Follow the alarm maker's instructions. Many people change batteries once or twice a year and test monthly, and some alarms have sealed batteries meant to last the life of the alarm.
How do I know if a smoke alarm is too old?
Alarms have a manufacture date printed on the back. If yours is past the maker's suggested life, the neighbor can point it out so you can replace it.
Can they service my furnace or air conditioner?
No, that is a job for a heating-and-cooling business. This service covers the simple upkeep only.
Thinking of offering this yourself?
- Stock a step ladder, a few common filter sizes, standard alarm batteries, a marker for dating filters, and a phone reminder for each customer.
- Keep a sheet for each home with filter sizes, alarm locations and dates so every visit is quick.
- Price per visit and add filters and batteries at what you paid for them; asking around about what small home-upkeep help costs will keep your price reasonable.
- Quarterly customers are ideal, so book the next visit before you leave.
- Leave anything beyond filters and batteries, such as wiring or furnace repairs, to a licensed pro.
