Most bike problems are small: a flat, brakes that rub or don't grab, a chain that skips or squeaks, a seat at the wrong height. A handy neighbor with the right tools can fix these in minutes.

It's wanted by families with a garage full of kids' bikes, by adults pulling a bike out after years of sitting, and by riders who want a quick fix without leaving the bike somewhere for days.

A neighbor can meet you at their garage or come to your driveway, and you're often riding again the same day.

Also called: bike tune-up, fix a flat bike tire, bicycle repair, mobile bike repair, kids bike repair, bike brake adjustment.

What's usually included

  • Fixing flats by patching or replacing the tube, and checking the tire for what caused it
  • Pumping tires to the right pressure
  • Adjusting brakes and gears
  • Cleaning and oiling the chain
  • Setting seat and handlebar height for the rider
  • Telling you when a part is worn out and should be replaced

What to ask before you hire

  1. What's wrong, in your own words, and what kind of bike is it: kids', road, mountain or electric?
  2. Who buys parts like tubes, tires or cables, and how are they paid for?
  3. Will you bring the bike over, or will they come to you?
  4. When do you need it back?

Staying safe

  • Spin the wheels and test the brakes after every adjustment, before handing the bike back
  • Don't open or repair e-bike batteries
  • Teens offering this should work with an adult nearby, especially when people they don't know bring bikes over

Questions people ask

Can a neighbor fix an electric bike?

Many can fix flats and adjust brakes on an e-bike. Motor, battery and wiring problems usually need a shop that works on that brand.

How often does a bike need a tune-up?

It depends on how much it's ridden. A check at the start of riding season catches most of the common problems.

Do I have to bring the bike to them?

Some neighbors work out of their own garage and others will come to you. Settle it when you ask for the job.

Can a teen fix my bike?

A teen who's handy with bikes can do flats and simple adjustments with an adult around. Look at their ratings and start with a small job.

Thinking of offering this yourself?

  • Keep tire levers, a pump with a gauge, a set of hex keys, a patch kit and spare tubes in common sizes
  • Stick to what you know; e-bike motors and batteries and hydraulic brakes are separate skills
  • Ask the owner before buying parts, and show them the old part you replaced
  • Price by the job (a flat, a tune-up, a brake adjustment), and set your own rates for your area after looking at what local shops and neighbors ask
  • Spring is the busy season, so a note to past customers when the weather warms up can fill your schedule
