Detailing goes well past a wash. Inside, it means pulling the mats, vacuuming the seams, cleaning vents and cup holders, and shampooing fabric or conditioning leather. Outside, it can include clay, polish and a wax or sealant.
People want it before selling or trading in, after a road trip with kids and dogs, at the change of seasons, or when the car is simply past what a quick wash can fix.
A detailer nearby can work in your driveway for a few hours, and you can see the before and after without taking the car anywhere.
Also called: mobile car detailing, interior car detailing, auto detailing at home, car interior deep clean, wax and polish my car, car seat shampoo.

What to ask before you hire
- Which package: interior, exterior, or both?
- Is there pet hair, sand, spills or a smoke smell? Those take extra time.
- Will the detailer need your power and water, and is there shade to work in?
- Will they use a machine polisher, and have they used one on cars like yours?
- What should come out of the car first, and where will it go?
- How long will it take, and do you need the car back by a set time?
Staying safe
- Ask the owner to clear out valuables, papers and car seats before you start
- Use cleaning chemicals in fresh air, follow the labels, and keep them away from kids and pets
- Never run the engine inside a closed garage

Questions people ask
How long does a detail take?
Usually several hours, depending on the vehicle's size and condition. Agree on a time window so you're not without the car longer than planned.
Can a detailer get rid of smells?
Many odors fade with a deep clean and a shampoo. Heavy smoke or mildew can take more, so ask what they can realistically do before they start.
Do I need to be there?
Be there at the start to agree on the job and at the end to look it over. You don't need to watch in between.
Should I detail my car before selling it?
A clean car photographs well and makes a better first impression on buyers. What a buyer offers is still up to them, so treat it as presentation, not a promise.
Thinking of offering this yourself?
- The basics are a strong shop vacuum, a carpet extractor or shampooer, detail brushes, microfiber, and products for both fabric and leather
- Take before-and-after photos with the owner's OK; they show your work better than any description
- Learn polishing on your own car first, because a machine polisher in untrained hands can burn through paint
- Price by vehicle size, condition and package, and look at what local detailers charge before you set yours
- Send past customers a reminder at the change of seasons, when people tend to want the car refreshed
