Moving help is the labor side of a move: packing boxes, wrapping furniture and mirrors, carrying everything out, and loading a truck or trailer so nothing shifts, then the same in reverse at the other end. You arrange the truck; the neighbors bring the muscle and the know-how.
People moving across town, seniors downsizing, college students, and families who rented a truck but cannot find enough friends free on a Saturday ask for it.
One or two neighbors can work around your schedule, even for just a few hours. Long-distance moves, pianos, safes, and anything that needs a moving company's equipment or coverage are better handled by a moving business.

What's usually included
- Packing and labeling boxes by room
- Wrapping furniture, mirrors and TVs in pads or blankets

- Carrying boxes and furniture out of the house
- Loading the truck tightly and strapping the load
- Unloading and placing things in the right rooms
What to ask before you hire
- Packing, loading, unloading: which parts do you need?
- How many rooms, and are there stairs, elevators or a long walk to the truck?
- Do you have boxes, tape, pads and a dolly, or should they bring some?
- Is anything very heavy or fragile, like a piano, a gun safe or a glass table?
- What time does the rental truck have to be returned?
Staying safe
- Lift with your legs, keep loads close to your body, and get help with anything you cannot carry comfortably.
- Take a dolly down stairs with a second person below, and never walk backward down a staircase.
- Wear closed shoes with good grip, since ramps and truck floors get slippery.
- Clear a path through the house before anything gets carried.

Questions people ask
Do I need to rent the truck myself?
Usually, yes. Most neighbor helpers bring muscle and gear, not the truck, so book the truck first and then the helpers.
How many moving helpers do I need?
Two is usually right for an apartment or a small home; more for a larger house or a tight timeline. A neighbor can suggest a number after a quick look.
Can they move a piano or a safe?
Those need special equipment and experience, so a moving company is the right call.
What if something gets broken during the move?
Talk it through before moving day. Careful wrapping and loading help, but decide ahead who is responsible if something is damaged.
Thinking of offering this yourself?
- A hand truck, a furniture dolly, moving blankets, straps, tape and a box cutter make every move easier, and a partner is a must.
- Load the heaviest pieces first against the front wall of the truck, then boxes, and fill the gaps so nothing slides.
- Price by the hour for each helper with a minimum number of hours, and look at what moving labor goes for locally before you settle on your rate.
- Ask about stairs, elevators and heavy items before moving day so nothing surprises you.
- Pass pianos, safes and long-distance moves to a moving company.
