When you travel in summer, a few hot days without water can undo a season of work. A neighbor who waters while you are gone hand-waters pots, hanging baskets and new plantings, soaks the vegetable garden, and checks that any sprinkler or drip timer actually ran.

Gardeners leaving on vacation, people whose new trees or sod need water every day, and anyone with a porch full of containers ask for it. It is usually a few short visits spread across a trip.

Someone a few doors down can stop by in the cool of the morning or evening, the cooler hours when watering does the most good. It is gentle, low-risk work that a careful teen with a parent's okay can handle well.

Also called: plant sitting, garden watering service, water my plants while on vacation, vacation plant care, garden sitter, potted plant watering.

What's usually included

  • Hand-watering pots, baskets and window boxes
  • Soaking beds, vegetables and new plantings
  • Checking that timers, sprinklers or drip lines ran
  • Picking ripe vegetables so the plants keep producing, if you would like
  • Moving pots into shade during a heat wave, if you ask
  • A photo or short update on how everything looks

What to ask before you hire

  1. Which plants need water every visit, and which only when the soil is dry?
  2. Morning or evening, and how many visits a week?
  3. Where is the outdoor faucet, and will the hose be left out?
  4. Should they keep the vegetables they pick, or leave them on the porch?
  5. Indoor plants too? That means a key, so look at house sitting or house checks.

Staying safe

  • Watch for wasps around hanging baskets and under eaves; move slowly and step back if you spot a nest.
  • Drink water yourself in the heat and do the watering early or late in the day.
  • Coil the hose and shut the faucet off when you leave so nobody trips and nothing floods.

Questions people ask

How often should my plants be watered while I am gone?

Containers in full summer sun often need water every day or two; established beds can usually go longer. Your neighbor should go by how dry the soil is, not just the calendar.

Can they water my indoor plants too?

Yes, if you are comfortable giving them a key, which really makes it a house check. Many people book both together.

Is plant watering a good job for a kid?

It is a gentle first job for a responsible teen with a parent's okay, especially for a neighbor the family already knows.

What if a plant dies anyway?

Plants sometimes struggle in extreme heat even with good care. A clear watering plan and a few photos during the trip help you both see what happened.

Thinking of offering this yourself?

  • You need little more than a watering can and the care to walk through a garden without stepping on anything; the customer's hose does the rest.
  • Walk through with the owner before the trip and photograph each pot and bed so you know what healthy looks like.
  • Push a finger an inch into the soil, and if it is dry, water slowly at the base of the plant instead of sprinkling the leaves.
  • Price by the visit, based on how many pots there are and how long a full round takes, keeping it in line with what people nearby pay for small favors like this.
  • People who come home to thriving plants tend to call you before every trip, and a closing message with photos helps.
