How Much Exercise Actually Protects Your Heart

The evidence-based target is 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week (about 30 minutes, 5 days a week) or 75 minutes of vigorous activity (like running), plus strength training at least twice weekly. But here's what matters more than hitting these numbers perfectly: consistency and starting where you are. Studies show that even 15 minutes of daily activity reduces heart disease risk by 14% compared to no exercise. Going from zero to some regular movement gives you most of the benefit; the difference between 150 and 200 minutes is smaller.

The intensity matters too. Moderate intensity means you can talk but not sing during activity. Vigorous means you can only say a few words. Both work—vigorous exercise is more time-efficient, but moderate intensity is easier to sustain long-term, which is what actually determines whether you stick with it.

Is it ever too late to start exercising for heart health?

Do I have to run to protect my heart?
