Algae and mold are both living organisms that colonize exterior surfaces, but they're fundamentally different and respond to different treatments. Algae are photosynthetic (they need sunlight) and appear as green, brown, or reddish slime, usually on sunny or semi-sunny areas. Mold is a fungus that feeds on organic matter, thrives in shade and dampness, and appears black, gray, or greenish—often in corners, under eaves, or where water pools. Misidentifying which you have means wasting effort on the wrong solution.

Identifying Algae

Algae growth is slimy, slippery to the touch when wet, and usually bright green, yellow-green, or reddish-brown. It tends to grow on surfaces that get regular moisture and decent sunlight—south-facing siding, roof shingles, deck boards, and concrete driveways. When you scrape it, algae comes off relatively easily in strands or sheets. It doesn't typically cause structural damage but makes surfaces dangerously slick and looks unsightly. Algae growth accelerates in humid climates and near sprinkler systems or gutters that splash water onto surfaces.

Identifying Mold

Mold appears as dark spots or patches—black, dark green, or gray—and has a powdery or fuzzy texture. It grows in shaded, damp areas: north-facing walls, under deck overhangs, around window frames, and anywhere water sits or seeps. Mold doesn't scrape off easily; it's rooted into the surface. A key test: spray a small area with diluted bleach (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). If it lightens within minutes, it's likely mold. Algae won't bleach as quickly or dramatically. Mold can cause health concerns (respiratory irritation, allergic reactions) and, if it penetrates wood or drywall, structural decay.

Treatment Methods by Type

Algae responds well to pressure washing (1500–2000 PSI on hardy surfaces) because it sits on the surface. However, for mold, high-pressure washing can drive spores deeper into pores and cracks, making it worse. Instead, treat mold chemically first: apply a mold-killing solution (diluted bleach, commercial mold remover, or oxygen-based cleaner) and let it sit 10–15 minutes. Then gently rinse or scrub. For algae, you can pressure wash immediately or use a lower-pressure rinse after a light algaecide spray. Both benefit from a preventive step: after cleaning, apply a mold or algae inhibitor to reduce regrowth.

Why This Distinction Matters

Using the wrong method wastes time and money—and can make mold problems worse. Pressure washing mold spreads spores and may force moisture deeper into materials, causing hidden rot. Conversely, applying bleach to algae-covered concrete and then waiting is overkill; algae dies quickly from physical removal alone. Understanding what you're treating lets you choose the fastest, safest, and most cost-effective approach. It also helps you address root causes: algae usually signals a moisture or drainage issue; mold signals poor airflow or standing water.
