Irreducible Complexity and Specified Complexity
Two core concepts underpin Intelligent Design. "Irreducible complexity," coined by biochemist Michael Behe, describes a system composed of multiple interacting parts where the removal of any one part causes the system to cease functioning. Behe argues such systems, like the bacterial flagellum or the blood clotting cascade, could not have evolved gradually because intermediate forms would be non-functional and thus not favored by natural selection. "Specified complexity," introduced by mathematician William Dembski, suggests that complex patterns that also carry specific information (like DNA sequences) are evidence of design, much like a complex sentence carries specific information.
Distinguishing ID from Creationism
While Intelligent Design shares common ground with creationism in its belief in a designer, ID proponents explicitly avoid identifying the nature or identity of that designer, often stating it could be a god, an alien, or another unspecified intelligence. This distinction is strategic, as it attempts to present ID as a scientific concept rather than a religious one, thereby sidestepping constitutional prohibitions against teaching religion in public schools. However, critics argue that ID is essentially a repackaged form of creationism, given its origins and proponents.
Intelligent Design matters because it represents a significant, ongoing challenge to the scientific consensus on evolution, particularly in educational and legal contexts. Its proponents advocate for its inclusion in public school science curricula, leading to legal battles that have consistently upheld that ID is not science and cannot be taught as such.
