Downtown Fayetteville's Main Street Alley Plaza opens after nearly a decade of planning

After planning and construction, downtown Fayetteville's Main Street Alley Plaza has soft-opened on the west side of Courthouse Square — giving residents their first look at shaded picnic areas, common spaces, and improved public parking where a cramped single-lane alleyway once ran.

The City of Fayetteville announced the opening, according to fayetteville-ga.gov. Public access to the new parking area began when fencing that had enclosed the construction zone was removed.

Phase One centered on the alleyway behind the west-side Courthouse Square buildings. The original single-lane driveway was relocated westward onto city-owned land, according to some accounts. That shift freed up room for a pedestrian-friendly courtyard plaza while the new roadway was widened and sidewalks were added — changes the city says addressed longstanding safety and accessibility concerns.

Businesses along the west side of the square remained open throughout construction.

The project is not finished. Work continues on the alleyway directly adjacent to the west-side Courthouse Square businesses, and the city expects that phase to reach completion later this summer, according to fayetteville-ga.gov.
