Shamar McCoy was riding in a car that had just been hit and left by a fleeing driver when a responding Atlanta police officer ran his name — and found a warrant that turned the 29-year-old social media personality from crash victim into handcuffed suspect, all in the span of a traffic stop.

Atlanta police responded Sunday to a hit-and-run at 610 Spring Street in Midtown. McCoy was a passenger in the victim's vehicle. When the officer added McCoy's name to the official accident report, records flagged an active battery warrant out of a November 25, 2024, incident in southwest Atlanta.

Body camera footage released by Atlanta police captured the moment McCoy was informed of the warrant. He complied with commands and was taken into custody without incident, according to the department.

Medical staff at Grady Hospital evaluated McCoy before officers booked him into the Fulton County Jail on Monday. He was released the same day on a $2,000 surety bond, according to jail records.

The warrant traces back to an alleged assault at an apartment on Delowe Drive in southwest Atlanta. According to a police incident report, a victim and a witness told officers that the victim had been arguing by phone with McCoy's then-boyfriend, Alexander Green. McCoy and Green then arrived at the apartment. Witnesses told police that Green punched the man, knocking him to the ground, and began kicking him — and that McCoy then kicked the victim in the head. A witness recorded the assault and uploaded the footage to Instagram, the report states.

McCoy has more than 414,000 followers on Instagram, according to WSB-TV. Authorities have not confirmed whether he has posted bond or announced a court date. Police have also not released the identity of the driver who fled the hit-and-run on Spring Street.

Why it matters — The arrest shows how a routine traffic report can surface an unresolved warrant — and that a pending misdemeanor charge can follow someone until it is resolved, regardless of circumstances.

⚠ Not yet confirmed

  • Whether McCoy has posted his bond and when he is scheduled to appear in court.
  • The identity of the driver who fled the hit-and-run crash on Spring Street.
  • misdemeanor descriptor for the battery warrant
