Tyrone Opens Registration for Free 8-Week Citizen Academy on How Local Government Works

If you've ever wondered what the Town of Tyrone's planning department actually does, or how local finances work, the town is now taking applications for a free eight-week program designed to answer exactly those questions.

The Town of Tyrone has opened registration for Tyrone 101: Citizen Municipal Academy, a free program that walks residents through the inner workings of local government one department at a time. The 2026 cohort begins Tuesday, September 8 at 6 p.m. and meets every Tuesday through October 27, according to the town's official website.

Each of the eight sessions covers a different town function. The lineup, according to sources, includes administration and form of government, planning and community development, finance and economic development, leisure services, and more.

The program is modeled on the town's existing Citizens' Police Academy, which uses the same format of regular evening sessions to give residents direct access to a specific area of town operations. Tyrone 101 broadens that concept across the full municipal government.
