North Carolina Central University opened its Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Research on Monday with a ribbon-cutting at 1712 Fayetteville St. — marking what the university says is a first for any historically Black college or university in the United States.
The $7.2 million facility will serve as a dedicated hub for AI education and research, giving NCCU students hands-on learning opportunities in artificial intelligence literacy, robotics, and ethical technology, according to Hey Durham.
The ribbon-cutting took place at 11:30 a.m. Before the institute had a building of its own, that work lacked a permanent home on campus. The Fayetteville Street location now provides that dedicated space.
Why it matters — The institute positions NCCU — and Durham — at the leading edge of AI education within the HBCU community, expanding access to high-demand technology training for students historically underrepresented in the field.
