Steelers trade Joey Porter Jr. to Cowboys for two draft picks as contract standoff ends

Dallas lands the 26-year-old cornerback — who hadn't played a snap this season amid a contract dispute — in exchange for a 2027 sixth-rounder and a 2028 second-rounder.

The Pittsburgh Steelers' months-long standoff with cornerback Joey Porter Jr. ended Wednesday night the only way it could: with a trade. Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones acquired Porter Jr. in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick, according to a team source confirmed by CBS Sports. The Cowboys announced the terms Thursday morning.

Porter, 26, had not played a single snap for Pittsburgh this season. He missed all three of the Steelers' games amid a contract dispute — he sought an extension worth more than $30 million per year, according to CBS Sports, while Pittsburgh held to its policy of not negotiating multi-year extensions during the season. He was officially listed as out for Thursday night's game against the Cleveland Browns with a designation of not injury related/conditioning/back, per NFL Network's Jane Slater. As NFL.com put it: he would never play for the Steelers again.

The Steel City impasse is over.

The trade was first reported by The Ringer's Tom Pelissero. Jones had telegraphed a major move after Dallas's 37-20 Week 2 win over the Washington Commanders, and he delivered — though the Cowboys enter Week 4 at 1-2, with a defense that ranks 30th in total yards allowed, according to NFL.com.

The numbers behind Dallas's defensive collapse explain the urgency. Since trading edge rusher Micah Parsons before the 2025 season, the Cowboys have allowed the most points per game (29.7), the second-most total yards per game (378.5), and the third-most passing yards per game (244.9), per CBS Sports. Through the first three games of 2026, Dallas has zero interceptions and just two sacks — making them only the third team since 1963 to allow 375-plus total yards per game, record two or fewer sacks, and have no interceptions through three games. The other two teams to do so were the 1976 New York Jets and the 2022 Arizona Cardinals; neither won more than five games that season, per CBS Sports Research.

Porter Jr. arrives as one of the league's most statistically dominant cover corners when healthy. He led the NFL in passer rating against as the primary defender in 2025 — a 49.1 passer rating allowed among 128 players with at least 60 pass attempts thrown their way, per CBS Sports. No other corner allowed a sub-50 passer rating against. His 48.1% career completion percentage allowed ranks fourth-lowest in the NFL since 2023 among corners with at least 150 passes thrown their way, per CBS Sports Research. He has 41 career starts, 165 tackles, three interceptions, and 31 pass breakups across three seasons.

Despite those numbers, Porter has never been selected to the Pro Bowl and has just three career interceptions. His case for a top-of-market deal rests almost entirely on coverage metrics — metrics that place him ahead of Patrick Surtain II (four years, $96 million), Derek Stingley Jr. (three years, $90 million), and Christian Gonzalez (four years, $135 million, the highest average per year among all NFL corners), according to CBS Sports.

Porter enters the final year of his 2023 rookie contract. The Cowboys could franchise tag him if no long-term deal is reached before the 2027 league year. Dallas currently holds $20.8 million in cap space for 2026 — eighth-most in the NFL per OverTheCap.com — though their 2027 cap currently sits at -$13.1 million. Rolling over unused 2026 space would bring that figure into the black, per CBS Sports. If Porter departs in free agency, Dallas could receive a 2028 third-round compensatory pick.

The Cowboys' cornerback room heading into the trade had DaRon Bland as the one locked-down starter, with Shavon Revel Jr. and Cobie Durant also earning starts — though both missed practice Wednesday, according to NFL.com. Porter's 6-foot-2, 193-pound frame gives first-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker a proven cover corner to anchor a secondary that has yet to record an interception this season.

The deal is the third recent trade between Pittsburgh and Dallas. The Steelers previously sent offensive lineman Broderick Jones — also a 2023 first-round pick — to the Cowboys; Jones has appeared in all three Dallas games but has taken just one offensive snap, per NFL.com. Porter's father was a four-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion with the Steelers from 1999 to 2011, per NFL.com, making the departure a notable generational break from Pittsburgh.

Porter and Pro Bowl wide receiver George Pickens — acquired earlier this offseason — are both represented by agent David Mulugheta of Athletes First, the same firm that represented Micah Parsons before his negotiations with Dallas broke down and he was traded to the Green Bay Packers, per CBS Sports. Jones, who turns 84 on Oct. 13, now has two major contract negotiations with the same agent on his hands as he pushes for what CBS Sports describes as a fourth Super Bowl ring. Dallas plays the Houston Texans (0-3) on Sunday.

Why it matters — A Cowboys defense historically bad through three games just paid a second-round pick for a cornerback who hasn't played in months and could leave for free agency next spring — a gamble that defines Jerry Jones's win-now urgency at 83.
