An earthquake struck the sea south of Blitar, East Java, on Monday at 12:28 local time (05:28 UTC), rattling residents across a wide stretch of the province — from Blitar itself to Malang and as far as Lumajang.
International monitoring agency EMSC recorded the event at magnitude 4.6, with a depth of 121 km and an epicenter at coordinates 8.35°S, 112.21°E — roughly 25 km south-southeast of Blitar. Indonesia's own meteorological and geophysics agency, BMKG, reported a magnitude of 4.1 at a depth of 101 km, placing the epicenter about 44 km south of Blitar at 8.53°S, 112.27°E. The differences are consistent with the preliminary nature of rapid earthquake reporting.
BMKG attached a standard disclaimer to its report, noting that early data is prioritized for speed and that figures may change as more complete information becomes available.
The shaking was felt in Blitar and Malang — described as noticeable movement — and in areas including Lumajang, according to reports. At those levels, the tremor is perceptible to most people indoors but rarely causes damage.
Social media users in the affected areas quickly confirmed the sensation. Several accounts on X described feeling the tremor well beyond Blitar's borders.

No damage, injuries, or tsunami warning were reported. The event has been classified as a medium-depth tectonic earthquake linked to subduction zone activity beneath Java — a seismically active region where the Australian plate pushes beneath the Eurasian plate.
Parameters from all agencies remain preliminary. Minor revisions to magnitude and depth figures are expected as data processing is completed.
Why it matters — The event illustrates how quickly a moderate offshore earthquake can be felt across a wide populated area of East Java, and highlights the routine discrepancies between rapid agency reports that resolve as data matures.
