Ryan Blaney takes pole for NASCAR's Freeway Insurance 500 at Phoenix as playoff field narrows

With four races left in the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series Chase, Blaney starts from the front Sunday while points leader Kyle Larson lines up 22nd at the one-mile Arizona oval.

How does this story make you feel?

Ryan Blaney will lead the field to green Sunday afternoon at Phoenix Raceway for the Freeway Insurance 500 — a race that carries real weight with only four events remaining in the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series playoff.

Blaney's Penske teammate Joey Logano is also near the front. Points leader Kyle Larson, who has posted two wins this Chase — in Illinois and Kansas City — starts further back in the field.

The race at the one-mile oval in Avondale, Arizona is scheduled to go green at 3 p.m. ET (noon local time) on USA Network. Streaming is available on HBO Max, and fans can also catch the race on Hulu, YouTube TV, and DIRECTV Stream. Radio coverage runs on MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, channel 90.

Chase Briscoe arrives at Phoenix carrying momentum from a win at Charlotte last weekend. Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell are also identified as drivers to watch as the field fights for championship position on a track that, with its tight corners, rewards drivers who can balance outright speed with patience.

Sunday's Cup race is the headline event of a packed three-series weekend at Phoenix. The Craftsman Truck Series opened the weekend Friday evening with the Zero Carbon Bioethanol 150 Powered by POET on FS2. Saturday brought the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series' Timberland PRO 200 on The CW and ESPN, plus Cup Series practice at 4:30 p.m. ET and qualifying at 5:35 p.m. ET on truTV — the session that set Sunday's starting grid. The ARCA Menards Series West also ran its Desert Diamond Casino West Valley 100 finale Saturday night on FloRacing.

The race runs in three stages. With the Chase field shrinking and limited races left to make up ground, Phoenix represents one of the last chances for drivers outside the top positions to change their championship trajectory before the season's final stretch.

Why it matters — With only four races left in the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series Chase, Sunday's result at Phoenix could meaningfully shift the championship standings before the field heads into the season's final events.
