Texas couple charged in random highway shooting that killed 17-year-old headed to the zoo
Willie and Taiya Herndon, from Arlington, Texas, were arrested at an Illinois hotel after surveillance video and a vehicle decal linked them to the killing of Alyssa Wilson on I-170 in Missouri.
Alyssa Wilson was 17, a high school senior, and on her way to meet a friend at the St. Louis Zoo when a white SUV pulled to the shoulder of Interstate 170, a passenger stepped out, fired at least one shot into the rear of her moving vehicle, and got back in. She never made it to the zoo. On Monday, prosecutors announced that a Texas husband and wife have been charged in her killing — and that they had no connection to her whatsoever.
St. Louis County Prosecutor Melissa Price Smith announced charges against Willie Herndon, 43, of Arlington, Texas, who faces first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and felon in possession of a firearm. His wife, Taiya Herndon, 45, is charged with hindering prosecution for allegedly driving him to Illinois after the shooting. Both are being held on cash-only bonds — $1 million for Willie Herndon and $500,000 for Taiya Herndon.
The shooting happened on the evening of October 14 on southbound I-170 just south of St. Charles Rock Road in Overland, Missouri. According to court documents, Wilson sustained puncture wounds to the back and chest consistent with a projectile fired into the rear of her vehicle. The gunfire incapacitated her, and her car crashed into the concrete median wall. Officers responding to the crash near Midland Boulevard around 7:20 p.m. found her shot inside the vehicle. She was taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Surveillance video from the area captured the sequence: a white Buick Enclave — registered to Taiya Herndon, according to police — pulling to the right shoulder, a passenger exiting, a gunshot ringing out seconds later, and the vehicle fleeing. Investigators used license plate readers to track the SUV and zeroed in on a distinctive decal on the vehicle, following it to a hotel in Caseyville, Illinois. There, they found the same vehicle, but with a different license plate. Court records state that neither plate belonged to the car.
Police arrested the couple at the hotel after executing a search warrant. Taiya Herndon was seen opening the rear hatch of the vehicle when officers approached; Willie Herndon emerged from nearby, spotted police, and ran. He was apprehended. A firearm was recovered from the hotel room. Willie Herndon, who has prior convictions for possession of a stolen vehicle, felony receiving known stolen property, and felony burglary, subsequently gave investigators details about his involvement in the shooting, as well as information about what officials described as possible ongoing investigations in other areas, according to wsmv.com.
Investigators have declined to share a motive. Chief Deputy Commander Jack Abell of the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis confirmed Monday that the Herndons had no relationship with Wilson.
Alyssa was 17, excited about her life, excited about her future. She had 60 days until she turned 18, and we were getting ready to take our first family vacation together to go to Disney for her to see her favorite person in the world, Princess Tianna and unfortunately, she's not going to get to do that anymore. This was a senseless act.— Robert Hickman, Alyssa Wilson's father
Wilson was a senior at McCluer North High School, where she was a student-athlete and office aide and had planned to attend college the following year, according to wsmv.com.
The investigation also surfaced a possible earlier incident. Authorities said that on October 11 — three days before Wilson was killed — another vehicle was shot at after a white SUV pulled to the side of the road in what appears to be a similar pattern. A shell casing recovered from that scene shares the same manufacturer as the casing found at the site of Wilson's killing. Further forensic testing is underway to determine whether both casings came from the same weapon, according to court records cited by abcnews.com.
No arrest can bring Alyssa back, but we hope this announcement represents a step toward accountability and justice.— Sgt. Michael Clymer, public information officer, Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis
Hickman thanked the Major Case Squad, the FBI, and the City of Overland for the investigation. The case now moves toward prosecution, with the question of motive — and any link to the October 11 shooting — still unresolved.
Why it matters — A teenager was killed in what investigators describe as a random highway shooting with no known motive, and a possible second shooting by the same weapon days earlier raises the prospect that the case extends beyond a single victim.
