Tom Skerritt, who commanded screens in Alien, Top Gun and Picket Fences, dies at 93
The actor who made authority look effortless — as Captain Dallas, Viper, and an Emmy-winning small-town sheriff — died Wednesday of natural causes after more than 60 years and 170 screen credits.
Tom Skerritt, the lean, mustachioed actor who spent six decades making audiences believe in the man in charge — whether that man was piloting a doomed spacecraft, training hotshot fighter pilots, or keeping the peace in a chaotic small town — died Wednesday of natural causes. He was 93.
While the world knew Tom through his remarkable acting career, we knew him for his humor, curiosity, wisdom, generosity, and the love he brought into our lives.— Skerritt family, statement
The statement was distributed by his publicist, Susan Madore. Skerritt is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His last screen credit was the 2025 western drama Broke, alongside Dennis Quaid, according to The Guardian. Before that final role, he had accumulated more than 170 film and television credits — a body of work that earned him a Primetime Emmy, and Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations.
Skerritt's career had an unlikely starting point. After a four-year tour of duty in the U.S. Air Force, he made his big-screen debut in the 1962 war film War Hunt alongside Robert Redford and Sydney Pollack, according to The Guardian. He spent much of the 1960s in Westerns and television, including appearances on Bonanza and Gunsmoke, before his breakout arrived with Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, in which he played surgeon Duke Forrest. The film was a major box office hit and was nominated for the best picture Oscar.
The 1970s brought cult films — Harold and Maude, Altman's Thieves Like Us, Roger Corman's Big Bad Mama — and the Oscar-nominated ballet drama The Turning Point starring Anne Bancroft and Shirley MacLaine. But it was the decade's final year that changed his trajectory. Ridley Scott's Alien (1979) cast Skerritt as Captain Dallas, the commander of an intergalactic shipping crew confronting a lethal extraterrestrial threat. Skerritt had initially turned the role down, citing the low budget.
At two million bucks and with other actors that I don't know about, this is a film that could have been directed by Ed Wood.— Tom Skerritt, 2019 interview
He took the role. The film became a landmark of science fiction and horror, and Skerritt's range expanded with it. The 1980s brought David Cronenberg's The Dead Zone and then Top Gun (1986), directed by Tony Scott, in which Skerritt played Viper — a flight instructor initially unimpressed with Tom Cruise's Maverick before taking him under his wing. That role, too, nearly went to someone else.
There was some question about me playing that role because I was … I think they used the word, laconic. It pissed me off. I went into it with [producer] Don Simpson, who was still alive at that point … don't tell me, as a producer, what you think I'm going to be doing. You're going to get what you need.— Tom Skerritt, 2021 interview with Vulture
The 1990s cemented the fatherly dimension of his screen persona. In Robert Redford's A River Runs Through It (1992), he played a reverend dispensing hard-won wisdom alongside Brad Pitt. In Steel Magnolias, he played husband to Sally Field's character and father to Julia Roberts' Shelby. He also appeared in the thriller Poison Ivy opposite Drew Barrymore and in Jodie Foster's Contact.
But the decade's defining work came on television. David E. Kelley's CBS series Picket Fences, which ran from 1992 to 1996, cast Skerritt as Sheriff Jimmy Brock — an aging lawman trying to hold together a small town pulled in every direction. The role won him the 1993 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
My heart is broken to hear of the passing of dear, lovely, loving, Tom, my TV husband, my partner, my darling friend. He taught me so much … I couldn't have asked for a more gracious and kind actor to work with, and it was very special to share with him the incredible run of the show.— Cathy Baker, Picket Fences co-star, statement to People
a shining light of a gentle man— Julia Roberts, Steel Magnolias co-star
He continued working into the 2000s and beyond, with roles in Tears of the Sun alongside Bruce Willis, Whiteout with Kate Beckinsale, and television appearances on The West Wing, Will & Grace, and Brothers & Sisters, as well as the 2012 comedy Ted.
Off screen, Skerritt co-founded the Red Badge Project in 2012, an initiative aimed at helping veterans process PTSD, anxiety, and depression through writing and sharing their experiences, according to CNN. He also helped create Reflections of the River, a documentary series on America's rivers, partially inspired by his time filming A River Runs Through It.
It starts with that wanting to help someone else rather than talking about it. I just got tired of talking about this if I could do something about it.— Tom Skerritt, CBS News
In a 2020 reflection on his career, Skerritt traced his path to acting back to a college screening of Citizen Kane at UCLA. He described himself as fundamentally shy — someone who found in performance a way to break through his own reserve. In 2021, he offered a characteristically understated summary of a life spent playing strength.
I'm just a lucky guy, man. Strength is measured in how you confront your weaknesses. I have had a lot of weaknesses. I still have them.— Tom Skerritt, 2021
Why it matters — Skerritt's death closes the career of one of American cinema's most reliable character actors, whose work across six decades — from Altman's counterculture satire to blockbuster sci-fi and Emmy-winning television — defined a particular archetype of quiet, earned authority.
