M6.0 earthquake strikes off northern Vanuatu with no casualties or tsunami warning
A shallow earthquake hit northwest of Port-Olry on October 28, part of recent seismic activity in the region.
An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 struck northwest of Port-Olry, Vanuatu, in the early hours of October 28, 2026. No tsunami warning was issued, and there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The M6.0 event occurred at 0221 GMT, about 214 km northwest of Port-Olry, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter was at 13.931°S, 165.446°E at a shallow depth of 10 km.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not immediately issue a tsunami warning based on the quake.
A separate M5.4 earthquake recorded on October 29 in the Coral Sea, roughly 292 km north of Port-Vila, exposed an estimated 70,000 people to some level of shaking, according to earthquakelist.org. Of those, approximately 1,410 experienced strong shaking at Modified Mercalli Intensity level VI — enough for light damage — while the majority, around 40,000 people, felt only weak shaking with no damage expected. USGS impact assessments for the event place fatality and economic risk at the lowest level, Green.
Vanuatu sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones where continental plates collide. Pacific island nations including Fiji, Tonga, and Vanuatu experience frequent seismic activity as a result, according to Xinhua.
One aftershock of M4.9 was recorded 49 minutes after the October 29 M5.4 event, approximately 13 km northeast of that epicenter. Earthquakelist.org estimates a roughly 94 percent probability that no larger earthquake will follow in the coming days, though standard guidance advises monitoring local authority updates after any significant shallow offshore event.
Why it matters — Vanuatu's position on the Ring of Fire means shallow offshore earthquakes in rapid sequence carry a standing risk of tsunami generation and cumulative structural stress, making each new event in an active swarm worth tracking even when individual impacts are low.
