Kompany out of hospital and recovering, Danks says, as Bayern prepare for Freiburg

Bayern Munich's interim boss Aaron Danks says Vincent Kompany has been discharged and is improving daily after collapsing at the club's training ground last Friday.

How does this story make you feel?

Vincent Kompany is out of hospital and recovering at home with his family after collapsing at Bayern Munich's training ground last Friday, assistant coach Aaron Danks confirmed ahead of the club's Bundesliga trip to Freiburg on Sunday.

Vincent is out of hospital. That's fantastic news. We're very pleased that he's getting better. But he needs to rest. He needs to recover, spend time with his family and continue to get better. He's doing better and is on the road to recovery. We'll simply try to do our best and prepare for the game on Saturday.— Aaron Danks, Bayern Munich assistant and interim head coach

Danks, speaking to DAZN ahead of the Freiburg match, added that medical tests are continuing but that the overall picture is encouraging.

The feedback is really positive at the moment. He is feeling a little bit better every day. The tests are continuing. But yes, the signs are certainly positive.— Aaron Danks, Bayern Munich assistant and interim head coach

Kompany collapsed while watching a training session of Bayern's reserve team. He had been suffering from a virus in the days before the incident, though the specific cause of the collapse has not been confirmed. Bayern's board member for sport Max Eberl said on Saturday that Kompany is expected to be out of action for weeks, with Danks in charge in the meantime, according to dpa-international.com.

Danks had already stepped in to manage Bayern's 6-1 DFB-Pokal victory over 1. FC Magdeburg, with Kompany absent from the touchline. The Englishman has said he is unsure how long he will remain in charge, with the focus for now firmly on Kompany's recovery.

I think that at times like this, it's really important to stick together and pull even closer together as a team, as a club. There are things happening that are even more important than football. But that's exactly what we want to show in today's match - that we're also playing for those who can't be here right now for the reasons mentioned.— Jonathan Tah, Bayern Munich defender

Bayern arrived at Freiburg already dealing with a cluster of absences beyond Kompany. Joshua Kimmich was absent due to a family bereavement, while Manuel Neuer, Jamal Musiala, Aleksandar Pavlović, Luis Díaz and Kim Minjae were all sidelined through injury, according to dpa-international.com.

When a fellow coach isn't feeling well and can't be on the touchline, you feel for him and naturally wish him all the best.— Julian Schuster, Freiburg head coach

Why it matters — The health of a high-profile manager mid-season directly affects a club's results and stability, and Kompany's situation has left Bayern — still undefeated in Europe — navigating a run of fixtures without their head coach and several key players simultaneously.
