Kim Kardashian reportedly won't retake the bar exam until 2027 at the earliest

Playing a divorce lawyer on Hulu while failing the real bar exam last year, Kardashian says she's 'always thinking about' it — but her schedule won't allow another attempt yet.

How does this story make you feel?

Kim Kardashian is currently playing a divorce lawyer on television. She is not, however, a lawyer in real life — and her next shot at changing that is at least a year away.

Speaking to reporters at Monday's New York Season 2 premiere of All's Fair, Kardashian said she is still determined to pass the California bar exam, though she has no plans to take it again in the near future. According to Page Six, an insider confirmed she won't attempt the exam until 2027 at the earliest.

Kardashian said she is always thinking about the bar and plans to take her time and wait until the moment is right, when she has some free time to focus on it.

Kardashian, 46, was among the 7,362 candidates who sat for the July 2025 California bar exam, according to the State Bar of California, as reported by the ABA Journal. She did not pass. The exam — a two-day ordeal comprising 200 multiple-choice questions, five one-hour essays, and a 90-minute performance test — is among the most demanding in the country. Only 48.3% of July 2025 test-takers passed, according to the state bar.

A Page Six insider offered a simple explanation for the delay: "Most people who take the bar exam dedicate months leading up to the test and focus all their energy on preparing," the insider said, adding that Kardashian "is working nonstop as a single mom and trying to do it all."

Kardashian does not hold an undergraduate degree or a law school credential. She has pursued California's alternative 'Law Office Study Program,' an apprenticeship pathway that the state — one of only a few in the country — allows as a route to bar eligibility, according to the ABA Journal.

The All's Fair role has added a layer of irony to her situation. She told Page Six that when she and co-creator Ryan Murphy first discussed the show, the parallel was part of the appeal.

When Ryan and I sat down at the beginning, we said, 'How cool would it be to play a lawyer on TV and play one in real life?'

She had hoped to have passed the bar before filming began. She hasn't given up on that overlap happening.

I'd love to partner the two. I hope it happens while the show is still happening, so fingers crossed, prayers up!

Kardashian's legal journey began in 2019, when she disclosed to Vogue that she had taken up the study of law following her role in winning freedom for Alice Marie Johnson, who had been serving a life sentence. She passed the state's 'baby bar' — the First-Year Law Students' Examination — on her fourth attempt in 2021, after failing it three times.

On the red carpet Monday, she pushed back against anyone who finds her situation embarrassing.

I never really get embarrassed. I think it's embarrassing for people that don't try to study for the bar that would ever put me in an embarrassing situation.

Even if the outcome isn't what other people would want, I know more than all of them combined because I know the law! So I'm proud of that, I'm proud of that.

Page Six reported that she expressed her intention to never give up on that dream. Whether the timeline aligns with All's Fair's run on Hulu remains to be seen.

Why it matters — Kardashian's bar journey is a live test of California's rare apprenticeship-to-lawyer pathway, and her public struggle with one of the country's hardest exams puts a spotlight on how accessible — or not — that route actually is.
