Bridget Fonda, 62, photographed in LA showing reported 100-lb weight loss

The actress, who stepped away from Hollywood in 2002, has been spotted out more frequently in recent months — and sources say the transformation has her considering a return to acting.

How does this story make you feel?

Bridget Fonda stepped out in Los Angeles on Monday to run errands with a friend, appearing relaxed and smiling in a gray tee, black trousers, and a yellow button-up shirt left open — a casual look that drew attention because of how rarely the 62-year-old is seen in public, and because of the visible results of what sources describe as a roughly 100-pound weight loss.

Fonda, who retired from acting in 2002, has been photographed out and about more frequently in recent months. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, composer Danny Elfman, and their son Oliver. She has not publicly commented on her health journey.

The sightings have fueled speculation, reported by The Sun, that the transformation may have rekindled her interest in returning to the screen — more than two decades after she last appeared in a production.

She has incredible talent, so it's not going to be hard for her to get cast.— Unnamed source

Fonda's withdrawal from Hollywood was shaped by more than a simple choice to retire. Prior to her 2003 marriage to Elfman, she was seriously injured when she lost control of her car on the Pacific Coast Highway during a storm, fracturing two vertebrae. The accident required a lengthy recovery and, according to The Sun, further cemented her decision to step back from public life.

Her final screen credit was the title role in Snow Queen, a 2002 Hallmark channel adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen story. Her last red-carpet appearances came in August 2009, at screenings of Taking Woodstock and Inglourious Basterds, and later that year she attended her aunt Jane Fonda's Broadway run in 33 Variations.

Before her retirement, Fonda had built a substantial career across the 1990s. She earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Mandy Rice-Davies in the 1989 film Scandal, and went on to lead or co-star in Single White Female, The Godfather: Part III, Jackie Brown, Point of No Return, A Simple Plan, and Lake Placid, among others. Her first screen appearance, uncredited, came at age four in Easy Rider — the 1969 film that starred her father, Peter Fonda.

She comes from one of Hollywood's most prominent families. Her father Peter was the son of Henry Fonda, whose career spanned more than five decades on Broadway and in film. Her aunt, Jane Fonda, won two Academy Awards — for Klute in 1972 and Coming Home in 1979.

In a 1993 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Fonda spoke candidly about the pressures she felt around her appearance during the height of her fame.

What is it with my low self-esteem? Sometimes I feel like I can make myself look the way that I'm happy with, but I get really depressed if I think of the big picture or compare myself to movie stars who are supposed to look like Veronica Lake or Lauren Bacall. Like you've got to be a model. It's a weird pressure.— Bridget Fonda, in 1993
I have this fear that I'm going to be lax in my struggle to better myself. I got that from Mom. She always said, 'You're not doing enough, you're not working hard enough.'— Bridget Fonda, in 1993

Fonda was first photographed publicly after a roughly 20-year absence in 2022, according to The Sun. The more recent sightings suggest she has grown more comfortable being seen — whatever her plans for what comes next.

Why it matters — One of the most prominent actresses of the 1990s has re-emerged after more than two decades out of public life, and people close to her say a Hollywood return may be on the table.
