A photography session is a planned shoot at a park, your home, a downtown street or a small event, followed by edited photos delivered digitally or printed. Common sessions include family portraits, newborn and maternity photos, senior pictures, headshots, pet portraits and small celebrations.
Families who want a photo together once a year, students getting senior pictures, small business owners who need headshots or product photos, and people hosting a birthday or anniversary book local photographers.
A neighbor photographer knows how the light falls at the town's parks and where the pretty spots are, and can meet you on short notice when the leaves turn or the weather clears.
Also called: senior pictures, headshot photographer, local photographer, mini sessions, newborn photographer, event photographer.
What's usually included
- Planning the location, time of day and what to wear
- The session itself, for an agreed length of time
- Editing and color-correcting the photos you choose
- Delivering photos through an online gallery or download link
- Print-ready files or prints, if agreed
What to ask before you hire
- How many edited photos will you get, and how soon?
- How may you use the photos, and may the photographer use them to show their work?
- What happens if weather cancels an outdoor session?
- How long is the session, and how many locations or outfit changes?
- Are prints included, or only digital files?
Staying safe
- Get written permission before posting anyone's photo online, and a parent's permission for any child.
- Pick locations away from traffic, railroad tracks and steep drop-offs, even when they look good on camera.
- Meet new clients in public places, and let someone know where your session is and when.

Questions people ask
Who owns the photos?
Agree in writing. Often the photographer keeps the copyright and the client gets permission to print and share for personal use, so ask if you need them for a business.
What time of day is the light nicest outdoors?
Many photographers prefer the hour after sunrise or before sunset, when the light is soft. Midday sun is harsher, so shade helps.
Can you photograph my small event?
Many neighbor photographers cover birthdays, showers and small gatherings. Share the timeline and the must-have shots ahead of time.
How do I choose a photographer?
Look through their past work, read the ratings other neighbors left them on Papalocal, and pick someone whose style you like.
Thinking of offering this yourself?
- Learn your camera well, and practice on friends and family before booking paid sessions.
- Show a portfolio of your real work, with permission from the people in it.
- Price each session after looking at local photographers and counting your editing hours, then set your own; short seasonal mini sessions are a popular option.
- Back up every session in two places before you erase a memory card.
- Card payments through Papalocal need a Citizen Plus membership and a Stripe account in your own name, so set those up before your first paid session.
- Families come back each year, and senior photos often lead to graduation, wedding and baby sessions.
