Party setup and cleanup is the hands-on work before and after an event: arranging tables and chairs, putting up decorations and string lights, laying out food stations and trash cans, and then breaking it all down, bagging trash and putting the yard or hall back the way it was.
Hosts of backyard birthdays, graduation parties, reunions, showers and church or club events hire help so they aren't hauling chairs at midnight. Rentals like tables, chairs and tents come from a rental business; a neighbor helper sets up what's delivered and gets it ready for pickup.
A neighbor can come early, stay late, and is close enough to come back the next morning for the last of the cleanup.
Also called: party setup help, party cleanup service, event setup and teardown, help setting up for a party, after party cleanup, graduation party setup.
What's usually included
- Arranging tables, chairs and linens to your layout

- Light tidying during the party, if agreed
- Breaking down, bagging trash and sorting recycling
- Stacking rentals neatly for the rental business to collect
What to ask before you hire
- What time should setup start, and when must cleanup be finished?
- What is being rented, and when does the rental business deliver and pick up?
- Is there a sketch of where tables, food and decorations go?
- Where does the trash go, and is there room in the bins?
- Will the helper stay during the party, or only before and after?
Staying safe
- Lift tables and full coolers with two people, and watch for pinch points when folding table legs.
- Tape down extension cords and keep them out of walkways.
- Stake or weight canopies and tents the way the rental business says, and take them down if the wind picks up.

Questions people ask
Can a teenager help set up a party?
Party setup is good work for a teen with a parent's OK and an adult running the event. Heavy lifting, ladders and tents are for the adults.
Do you bring the tables and chairs?
Usually not. Rentals like tables, chairs and tents come from a rental business, and the helper sets up and takes down what's delivered.
How early should setup start?
Allow more time than you think, especially for tents and decorations. Agree on a start time that leaves a cushion before the first guest arrives.
Will the helper take the trash away?
Some will haul bags away if your bins are full; others leave them bagged at the curb. Settle it ahead of time.
Thinking of offering this yourself?
- Carry a kit: zip ties, tape, scissors, trash bags, a step stool, extension cords and a tape measure.
- Photograph the space before you set up, so you can put everything back exactly where it was.
- Quote by the event or by the hour after seeing what local event helpers ask, adding for long breakdowns, and keep the number your own.
- Hosts throw the same parties year after year (birthdays, holidays, reunions), so ask to be on their list for the next one.
- Work with a partner on bigger events, since two people carry tables safely.
