Kids' party help is an extra pair of hands for a few hours: setting up tables and decorations, running games and crafts, serving food and cake, and cleaning up so the parents can enjoy the party too.

Parents bring in help for birthday parties at home, backyard holiday parties, and playdates that grew bigger than planned, especially with a crowd of preschoolers.

A helper from the neighborhood can come early to set up, may already know some of the families, and can stay a little late to stack chairs.

Also called: kids party helper, birthday party helper, kids party entertainer, party games leader for kids, birthday party assistant, help at my kid's birthday party.

What's usually included

  • Setting up tables, decorations and the party area
  • Leading games, crafts or a simple activity
  • Helping serve snacks, cake and drinks
  • Keeping kids engaged during activities, alongside the hosting parents
  • Cleanup, trash and putting things away
  • Extras by agreement: face painting, balloons, photos

What to ask before you hire

  1. How many kids, what ages, and how long is the party?
  2. Which games or activities, and who brings the supplies?
  3. Do any guests have food allergies?
  4. Which hosting adults are in charge of watching the kids, especially around water, trampolines or a fire pit?
  5. When should the helper arrive to set up, and when should they leave?

Staying safe

  • The hosting parents stay in charge of the kids; helpers assist but don't replace adult supervision
  • Know where the first aid kit is and which adult to get if a child is hurt
  • Watch for food allergies and choking hazards like small toys, balloon pieces and whole grapes around little kids
  • Keep kids away from pools, grills and the street unless an adult is right there

Questions people ask

Can a teen help at my kid's party?

Yes, a teen helper with an adult in charge works well, and teens are often great at leading games for younger kids.

How many helpers do I need?

It depends on how many kids are coming and how old they are. Toddlers and preschoolers need more hands than older kids.

Do party helpers bring games and supplies?

Some bring their own kit; others use what you provide. Settle it ahead of time so nothing is missing on the day.

Can they handle setup and cleanup too?

Yes, and that's often the most helpful part. Ask them to arrive before the guests and stay until the last plate is cleared.

Thinking of offering this yourself?

  • Keep a short list of games for different ages and a bag of supplies: bubbles, chalk, a play parachute, simple crafts
  • Teens can help with an adult in charge, and two teens with a parent coordinating make a good team
  • Get the party schedule from the host and stick to it: arrival, games, food, presents, goodbyes
  • Set your own price for your area by party length and what you bring
  • Kids talk about a fun party helper at school, and that's how parents planning the next party hear about you
