Weeding, mulching and planting in Peachtree City
Peachtree City's planting calendar turns on two Falcon Field dates: a median last spring freeze of March 26 and a median first fall freeze of November 6, about 226 frost-free days apart. Because those dates are medians, roughly half of springs still bring a freeze after March 26, so tender annuals are safer going in a little later, while weeding and mulching run right through the long season.
New plantings meet the heat quickly here: May is the station's driest month at about 3.1 inches, and July's normal high is 91°F, so if you're hiring, ask whether the helper can come back to water through the first few weeks. If you offer bed work, think of it as a season of visits rather than one job, from spring planting through summer weeding to the fall cleanup.
In Peachtree City neighborhoods such as Kedron Hills, Smokerise Plantation and Stoneybrook Plantation, the city asks for an HOA approval letter with a tree removal permit, so a planting job that grows into a tree job starts with the HOA.
Good to know in Peachtree City
- Planting, trimming or removing anything on a street, alley or sidewalk is against city code, so bed work stays on the customer's own land. (Peachtree City Code Sec. 70-1 (city code saved Sept. 15, 2026))
- Keep a 3-foot clear space around every fire hydrant and fire department connection when planting or spreading mulch. (Peachtree City Code Sec. 38-2 (city code saved Sept. 15, 2026))
- Vegetable plots can't go in the front setback area of a residential lot. (Peachtree City Code App. A Sec. 1001.2(g) (city code saved Sept. 15, 2026))
- Pulling underbrush and vines from a home lot needs no permit unless they sit in a designated tree-save area or buffer, but removing an understory tree 8 inches or more in trunk diameter, or a canopy tree 18 inches or more, needs a city tree removal permit. (Peachtree City Code App. B Sec. 1130(a), (c) (city code saved Sept. 15, 2026))
- Georgia law allows lawn and landscape watering only between 4 p.m. and 10 a.m.; hand watering, drip or soaker hoses, food gardens and new plantings for their first 30 days are exempt. (codes.findlaw.com)

Usually included

- Cutting a clean edge along beds with a spade or edger
- Spreading mulch or pine straw evenly
- Planting flowers, bulbs, vegetables or small shrubs you have chosen
- Watering in anything newly planted
Ask before you hire
- Who buys the mulch and plants, and who picks them up?
- Which beds, and is anything growing there that looks like a weed but is not?
- Pine straw, shredded mulch or rock, and how thick?
Questions people ask
How thick should mulch be?
A couple of inches is a common target. Mulch piled too deep, especially against tree trunks and plant stems, can cause problems, so keep it even and pulled back from stems.
Do I have to buy the plants myself?
You can, or the neighbor can pick them up and you pay them back. Decide ahead of time who chooses the plants so there are no surprises on planting day.
How often do flower beds need weeding?
Every two to three weeks in the growing season keeps most weeds from going to seed. One big cleanup a season works too, but each one takes longer.
